Somebody did a presentation on this in one of my computer science classes. There has actually been a lot of research done on this subject. There are companies that you can pay to help you get your page listed higher on more search engines. And I believe that Google, and I'm sure other search engine companies too, are constantly trying to be aware of the "tricks" people use, so that their search engines will not be fooled.
